The Chagga tribe is the third largest ethnic group in Tanzania, and a day trip to Marangu offers a wonderful opportunity to learn about their history and culture.
Located on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, Marangu is a charming small town with a great amount of history and ancient traditions. Unique rainforest landscapes and coffee ‘shambas’ (farms) surround the local area, also making it a pleasant place for some exploring.
On this full-day tour, you’ll be transported to Marangu Gate (1,900m), the starting point for all mountain treks via this route. Your first stop will be at a local coffee farm, where you will learn the traditional process of harvesting and processing the coffee. You’ll also get the chance to try your own hand at roasting and preparing a fresh, tasty cup yourself!
Following your coffee tour, you will then take a 1-hour hike (make sure to wear some good shoes as it can sometimes get muddy up there), passing through lush green landscapes to reach Ndoro Waterfalls. Here you will have the opportunity to relax and take a refreshing dip in the pool of the waterfall.
Another highlight of the tour will be the visit to the Chagga Underground Caves, which were an extensive network of underground caves used by the Chagga people to hide from the enemies during clan wars. After the caves, you’ll then get the chance to spend some time at the Chagga Live Museum, which will give you further insight into the local history and lifestyle. Here you will find several exhibitions, including a reconstructed thatched Chagga house.
If time permits, other optional activities include exploring the colorful markets or dropping into one of the local Chagga bars to drink the traditional ‘mbege‘ – a local brew made from millet and banana wine (not included in price).
Once you’ve had your fill of this beautiful place you will then get driven back to Moshi.
