Cycling Shira plateau is a great trip for mountain bikers and avid cyclists looking for a challenge. While cycling on Mount Kilimanjaro, you will see a variety of wildlife and on a clear day you might also get the chance to witness breath-taking views of Mount Kilimanjaro’s Kibo Peak

Starting Point: Londorosi Gate

Cycling Shira plateau journey begins at Londorosi Gate, located on the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro. Londorosi Gate is situated at an elevation of around 2,100 meters (6,890 feet), and it is the primary access point for climbers and trekkers taking the northern route up Kilimanjaro. Unlike the more common Machame or Marangu routes, Londorosi offers a more remote and quieter approach to the mountain, making it a great starting point for cycling enthusiasts looking for a more solitary adventure.

The distance from Londorosi Gate to the Shira Plateau is approximately 13-16 kilometers (8-10 miles), depending on the specific route taken. Cyclists will follow well-established trails that gradually ascend the mountain, offering a mixture of forest and alpine terrain, and eventually reach the Shira Plateau at an elevation of around 3,800 meters (12,500 feet).

Elevation Gain

The elevation gain on this cycling adventure is substantial. Starting from Londorosi Gate at 2,100 meters (6,890 feet), cyclists will ascend to Shira Plateau at 3,800 meters (12,500 feet), which results in an elevation gain of around 1,700 meters (5,577 feet).

This steep climb presents a physical challenge due to the thinning air at higher altitudes. The gradual ascent allows for some acclimatization, but the altitude can still have an impact, so it is important to pace yourself and take regular breaks. The trail is typically manageable, but those not accustomed to high altitudes may experience symptoms of altitude sickness, so proper preparation and hydration are essential.

Trail Type

The trail from Londorosi Gate to Shira Plateau offers a variety of terrain, which provides cyclists with a diverse and exciting experience. Key trail types include:

  • Dirt Roads and Forest Paths: Initially, the route takes cyclists through a beautiful tropical rainforest area, with lush vegetation and a mixture of dirt roads and well-maintained paths. The roads are typically wide and can be a bit muddy, particularly after rainfall, but they are rideable with a mountain bike.

  • Rocky and Volcanic Terrain: As cyclists ascend, the trail becomes more rugged and rocky, particularly as you approach the Shira Plateau. The volcanic terrain consists of loose gravel, rocky sections, and rougher paths, which can challenge even experienced cyclists.

  • Alpine and Moorland Tracks: Higher up, the landscape transitions into alpine meadows and moorlands. These sections offer stunning vistas and unique landscapes with flora such as giant groundsels and lobelias. The trails here are less technical but still provide a fun and scenic ride.

  • Occasional Steep Sections: Throughout the route, there are sections with steep inclines, requiring a more powerful pedal stroke. Some cyclists may need to get off and push their bikes during the steepest sections, particularly closer to the plateau where the altitude becomes more pronounced.

Day 1: Moshi - Londorossi MTB to Shira Plateau

Our trip will start with a two hours transfer to the Londorossi gate on the west side of the mountain. From there you will begin challenging bicycle ride upon the steep road that will take you through a rich greenrainforest. You will find yourself in the middle of a numerous three and bird species as well as wildlife. Then, the road will take you to the moorland zone from where you will be followed all the time with two beautiful scenes. On one side, uphill you will see magnificent Kibo peak covered with snow, and on the other side, downhill, endless Masai land will bring you peace and calmness. Depending on weather conditions, you will have packed lunch and break when we reach Shira plateau or on some other cosie spot. The ride back will be easier and quicker since it is downhill, but a bit more technically challenging. From the Lundorossi gate, where the bike ride ends, you will be transferred back to the city.
